Should new product companies hire freelancers?

Maybe - Modern financial planning & investment management

Maybe is modern financial planning, investment management and retirement planning.

This Twitter thread by Josh Pigford about his new company Maybe made me think about whether new product companies could / should hire freelancers as their main workforce.

This week Josh Pigford’s new company Maybe ditched it’s plan for a fully part-time / contract workforce, citing too much foundational work on the product needed. He now believes it's impossible for a new product company to hire only freelancers and still build a successful product.

As a freelancer, do you think a new product company can hire solely part-time / contract workers and build a successful product? If so, what should a company like this do differently to make it a success?
